With deep roots in the treatment of heart disease, Medtronic now provides a wide range of products and therapies - every five seconds, another life is improved by a Medtronic product or therapy.

Medtronic was founded in 1949 as a medical equipment repair shop by Earl Bakken and his brother-in-law, Palmer Hermundslie. The inspiration for Medtronic's first pacemaker was a musical metronome.

Medtronic’s first life-changing therapy – a wearable, battery-powered cardiac pacemaker – was the foundation for dozens more Medtronic therapies that use unique electrical stimulation expertise to improve the lives of millions of people.

Over the years, Medtronic has adapted additional technologies for the human body, including radio frequency therapies, mechanical devices, drug and biologic delivery devices, and diagnostic tools. Today, these technologies are used to treat more than 30 chronic diseases affecting many areas of the body.
